Palace of Westminster

Hello everyone,

This is a photograph of one of the most characteristic places in London, the Palace of Westminster. I have choosen to talk about it because I consider it a very beautiful place as well as of a very important value.

The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. It is situated on the north part of the River Thames in the heart of the City of Westminster. Its name probably refers to its structures: the Old Palace and the New Palace that stands today.

Westminster was the primary London residence of the Kings of England until a fire destroyed much of it in 1512. After that, it was used as the home of Parliament, which had been meeting there since the thirteenth century, and the seat of the Royal Courts of Justice, based in and around Westminster Hall.

As a conclusion it can be claimed that the Palace is one of the centres of political life in the United Kingdom and Westminster has become a reference for the UK Parliament. Its Clock Tower, more famous as 'Big Ben' after its main bell, is an iconic landmark not only of London but also of the United Kingdom and is one of the most popular tourists attractions in the city. The Palace of Westminster has been Grade I listed building since 1970 and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
