WESTERN U.S.

THE WEST
  • History: regarded by Americans as the last frontier. California has a history of European settlement older than that of most midwestern states. Spanish priests founded missions along the California coast before the outbreak of the American Revolution. In the 19th century, California and Oregon entered the Union ahead of many states to the east.
  • States: Alaska, Colorado, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.
  • Geography: The West is a region with a nice scenery and has more geographical diversity than other regions. All the states of the West are partially mountainous. Mountains in the West are newer than in the east, and therefore higher.
  • Developement: ranching and mining, hydroelectric power. The West is known for its recreational activities such as fishing, camping, hiking and boating.
